Introduction

In this brief letter to Dutee Pearce, Thomas Dorr updates his friend on the results of state wide elections for state general officers conducted under the Charter. Dorr had been elected governor under the People’s Constitution just two days earlier.

Letter

The returns of Monday’s election
come in very slowly. We have not yet heard from Glocester
and Burrillville! The whole vote for State Offices will
not vary much from 6500.

The freemen’s election has come off today as
usual. The Tories have from 450 to 500 majority here. The
People’s party have elected their Reps in Smithfield & Cumberland;
& would have done the same in N. Providence, had
not many suffrage men refused to vote. Amasa Sprague has
squeezed in by a very small majority in Cranston.

I hope you will come up here on Friday or
Saturday, as I wish very much to confer with you on the
present state of our affairs, and our future action.
